Overview

Applications are solicited ASAP for program facilitators to lead storytimes in languages other than English. BPL is seeking Facilitators who can lead storytime programs for children birth to age five and their families in designated branches of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) on specific dates beginning in October 2017, on a fee-for-service basis. We are seeking bilingual facilitators who can the lead the program in one or more of the following languages: Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Haitian Kreyol, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, or Yiddish.

 

All program leaders must also attend a paid training session scheduled on Tuesday, October 3rd from 1pm-4pm.  Each program leader must be willing to travel to their assigned branch, and be available to present programs on the assigned dates. Most storytime sessions will be scheduled on weekday mornings, but there will be some weekend times available. A three-hour commitment is required for each session. We will be scheduling programs for an 8 week series in October-mid December and additional series in the winter and spring.   

 

Responsibilities

  • Selecting and preparing read alouds in other languages.
  • Share picture books, songs, rhymes, fingerplays and developmentally appropriate arts and activities with families to encourage development and literacy in other languages.
  • Share tips and information with parents and caregivers about early literacy skills and how reading and playing with children can promote their development.
  • Encourage English Language Learning families to take advantage of other programs at BPL.
  • Provide feedback to Program Coordinator on parent involvement and participation, curriculum, books and materials, and conduct assessment surveys as needed.
  • Set up and clean-up program materials. 
  • Gather information and surveys from participants for an evaluation of this project.
  • Coordinate with assigned branch to prepare for the storytime series ahead of each session.
  • Report any problems to library staff overseeing the program. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a graduate library or education program desirable but not essential. 
  • Experience working with young children.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel.
  • Fluency in one or more of the following languages required: Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Haitian Kreyol, Mandarin, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Urdu, or Yiddish.
  • Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed

Stipend: $100 per session & $100 to attend the training session
