As the nation's 5th largest public library system with a network of 60 neighborhood libraries, Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is committed to providing the borough's 2.5 million people quality services and a vibrant learning environment through diverse and multi-ethnic educational and cultural programs for people of all ages.

BPL is seeking one full time Outreach Librarian to work in the Brownsville community, dedicated to providing excellent customer service, developing and strengthening fruitful partnerships in the Brownsville community, while implementing programs and services aligned with our mission and vision. This position requires professional knowledge and judgment, including, but not limited to, reference and reader’s advisory services utilizing materials both in print and electronic resources, collection development, and individual/group programming. The successful candidate will also possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to initiate community partnerships. Additionally, the candidate is expected to collaborate with staff in the Regional Librarian, Brownsville and Stone Avenue neighborhood libraries to provide services, develop programs and conduct outreach. The staff member will directly report to the Northeast Regional librarian




  • Plans, conducts and evaluates age-appropriate programs for children, families, young adults and adults.
  • Initiates partnerships with community agencies to promote BPL resources and programs.
  • Participates in outreach and community events; Supports class and school visits in the Brownsville community.
  • Registers families for library cards and other BPL initiatives both on and offsite.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services & offers bibliographic instruction.
  • Acts as an advocate for children, young adults, adults and their educational and social needs within the library and engages in work with schools, and other local agencies that work with children, young adults and adults.
  • Attends meetings, trainings and serves on committees when needed.
  • Interprets and implements BPL policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school; Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York, required
  • Ability to travel between the Brownsville and Stone Avenue libraries to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills; Strong presentation and programming skills
  • Experience in use of the online public access catalogs (Sierra a plus)
  • Familiarity with internet electronic databases, social media and basic computer applications
  • Basic understanding of current and emerging library technology, trends, and public library issues
  • 2- 3 years of experience working with the public and diverse communities preferred
  • Strong teamwork & teambuilding skills; respectful of team members’ input
  • Candidate must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing priorities and tasks
  • Ability to bend, sit and stand as needed


This position is a union position, represented by District Council 37. The salary for this position is $51,490.
