Overview

Brooklyn Public Library’s Adult Learning Department seeks to hire a F/T YALP Instructor to provide dynamic and engaging academic instruction to a young adult aged cohort in East New York, Brooklyn. The Instructor will be responsible for designing and delivering thematic units of study reflective of evidence-based literacy/numeracy instructional approaches, aligned with NYS CCSS standards. Effective instruction contributes to the successful transition of the YALP cohorts to HSE test prep programs. The YALP Instructor will be responsible for developing and managing service learning projects with their assigned cohort. The F/T YALP Instructor will function as part of an administrative and educational team, and will be expected to participate in collaborative facilitation and conferencing with other members of the team.   

The Instructor will work with other citywide YALP program staff, networks and community-based organizations to improve BPL collaborations around programming and transitions to create easily accessed resources and referral systems for our young adult learners. This position reports to the YALP Coordinator.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and provide engaging, explicit reading, writing and math instruction to a young adult population in the East New York section of Brooklyn
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of administrators, instructors and social support staff
  • Maintain confidential student records and assessment data Lead weekly student conferences with the Student Advisor
  • Develop and coordinate a service learning project with assigned cohort  
  • Provide support at recruitment, outreach and recognition events
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development as required
  • Perform additional duties as required

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Education or related field, MA/MS a plus
  • Minimum 2 years of successful, student centered, evidenced based Literacy and Math instruction/facilitation (experience co-teaching)
  • Evidenced, successful engagement with an at risk population
  • Knowledge of and capability of implementing Youth Development principles in a learning environment
  • Experience with Curriculum development, with a specific focus on thematic units of study
  • Experience with Project Management
  • Superior organizational, verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience administering the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment and working knowledge of the current NYS High School Equivalency Exam (TASC).
  • Dynamic, energetic personality with a passion for working with young people
