Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is the fifth largest public library system in the country, and serves Brooklyn’s 2.6 million residents at 60 branch libraries through free collections, classes and events. Whether it’s what you expect from a library (awesome books) or something totally unexpected (teaching girls to be reporters, Xbox bowling league for seniors or DJ training for teens), BPL offers something for everyone in Brooklyn.


BPL’s Marketing and Communications Department is currently seeking a Social Media and Digital Marketing Coordinator. The department oversees all of the Library’s public-facing materials and communications, from fliers and promotional items, to brochures and banners, produces collateral and content for its major fundraising campaigns, and manages its web presence, email communications and social media. This candidate will support the department across social, web and marketing operations, with the opportunity to lead projects where appropriate.


The ideal candidate will be fluent in a variety of traditional and digital media (including paid social media campaigns), assertive about staying on top of or ahead of the latest trends in digital communication and design, have some experience in traditional marketing, and above all be passionate about the mission of the library. They should be both creative and analytical, bringing enthusiasm and creative ideas to the team, as well as skilled in campaign reporting and analysis. They should have a killer instinct for social media; we’re looking for good ideas, great follow-through and quick thinking on our social platforms.


Applicants should be detail-oriented and creative, with strong written and verbal communication skills. This position requires professionalism, multi-tasking, leadership, research skills, accuracy, curiosity and enthusiasm.


Web, Email Communications and Social Media

  • Create content and help develop strategy for all of BPL’s social channels, deploy targeted social campaigns as needed, and manage permissions for other users across our institution
  • Collaborate on (with the opportunity to run) paid social media campaigns, from ideation to execution, for internal clients
  • Keep up-to-date on events happening across the library system and regularly select key events to promote across social channels, through email and on our website
  • Maintain analytics reports for BPL’s social channels showing growth, reach and engagement, and distribute to internal stakeholders
  • Contribute to ongoing website improvement projects, using Drupal (CMS) and coordinate with internal stakeholders when rolling out new content or campaigns

 Digital Marketing and Operations

  • Contribute to and support marketing and promotional campaigns
  • Work with Marketing & Operations Manager to deploy and manage the BPL online store
  • Vendor management and material fulfillment
  • Maintain relationships with outside organizations and companies to create and promote partnerships
  • Assist with managing office workflow and project management
  • Assist with our Digital Asset Management system for photo and branding assets (Widen experience a plus)


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university

  • 1-2 years of work experience in marketing and digital communications

  • Experience creating social media content on behalf of a professional organization

  • Fluency in, and great instincts for, all mainstream social media channels

  • Highly creative and adaptive thinker
  • Knowledge of emerging media and technology
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player
  • Highly organized, with exceptional written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills

Recommended Skills:

  • Familiarity and experience in paid social media campaigns (specifically Facebook) and use of Facebook Pixel on websites
  • Familiarity with website content management systems (Drupal preferred) and an analytics program (Google Analytics preferred)
  • Basic experience with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with project management tools (Asana preferred)
  • Experience with ecommerce platforms (Shopify preferred) and product marketing
  • A passion for, and connection to, the literary community is a plus!
