Brooklyn Public Library’s Literacy Department seeks a dynamic and experienced teacher to deliver Pre-HSE level instruction to a young adult (17 to 24 years old) population. The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of Balanced Literacy and Numeracy teaching approaches, Youth Development Principles and have a track record of success engaging disconnected, at-risk youth.


  • Develops and provide Pre-HSE instruction to a Young Adult population in the East New York section of Brooklyn.
  • Leads assigned cohort in Service Learning project each week.
  • Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of administrators, instructors, and social support.
  • Participates in ongoing training and professional development as required.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.


  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field, MA/MS a plus.
  • At least 2 years of teaching experience with youth or adults
  • Experience administering the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment and working knowledge of the TASC exam.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

This is a part-time position with a schedule of 19 hours per week at $35 per hour.
