  • Overview

    The Brooklyn Public Library Pre-HSE Program Assistant facilitates computer-based learning at BPL Adult Learning Program Pre-HSE classes - coaching students, providing computer basics instruction, stressing the importance of students becoming independent users of computer resources who will transition to HSE, higher education and workplace training. The Pre-HSE Computer Aide, under the supervision of the Pre-HSE Student Advisor, monitors and supports computer-based instruction for adult learners engaged in Pre HSE instruction to improve reading, writing and mathematics in an innovative, technology- and resource-rich learning environment. The BPL Pre-HSE Computer Aide will facilitate engagement in computer-based Pre HSE/adult basic education for adults seeking to transition to HSE, higher education and job training. They will provide support to the Pre-HSE teachers to assist with integration of technology into the classroom.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate computer-based learning; coach students, assisting adult learners in becoming independent users of computer resources and improve digital literacy skills..
    • Provide computer basics instruction and workshops; introduce students to workplace technology skills
    • Engage students in a learning community and facilitate reading and writing instruction; craft lesson plans with a focus on developing reading and writing skills, English language literacy skills and workplace literacy skills.
    • Work collaborativly with Pre HSE instructors and the Student Advisor, implement curriculum for digital Pre HSE instruction
    • Assist with student assessment activities, including online assessment and student self-assessment rubrics, checklists and portfolios
    • Maintain student records, student attendance and documentation of student progress as required
    • Assists with technical troubleshooting.
    • Participate in staff development initiatives

    Qualifications

    • Strong facility with computer software applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
    • Experience working in an customer service oriented environment
    • Strong motivation to keep up to date on new technologies
    • Knowledge of instructional software utilized with Smartboards and Ipads; online technology such as listservs, wikis,blogs, and online learning, a plus
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Ability to travel to Pre-HSE class locations at various branches
    • Hours: 15 hours per week. Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and Saturday
