  • Overview

    The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) seeks an energetic and highly organized Program Assistant to join its English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) team. The Program Assistant will perform administrative duties involving considerable variety and complexity of assignments--requiring independent judgment in applying guidelines to work situations. Individual must be well organized and will be responsible for maintaining students’ data records, providing computer-based instruction, supporting instructors, and coaching clients. 

    Responsibilities

    • Provides administrative support to staff and ESOL clients (e.g. filing, emailing and data entry)
    • Prioritizes work according to departmental needs; determines workflow problems and develops solutions.
    • Prepares documents, spreadsheets, and presentations as assigned including manuals, brochures, reports, budgets, and PowerPoint illustrations
    • Provides computer basics instruction and workshops; introduce students to workplace technology skills
    • Engage students in a learning community and facilitate reading and writing instruction
    • Assist with student assessments—BEST Plus/BEST Literacy, checklists and portfolios
    • Maintain and update clients E-records, student attendance and student progress reports
    • Assists with technical troubleshooting as needed
    • Participate in staff development initiatives

    Qualifications

    • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required --clerical experience a plus
    • Strong technology skills, software applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Knowledge of instructional software, Learning Management Systems (LMS) platforms, social media, wikis, and blogs
    • Familiarity with Salesforce, ASISTS and/or Google docs a plus
    • Familiarity with web-based databases
    • Experience working in a customer service oriented environment
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills
    • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and weekends

    This is a grant-funded, part time position with a schedule of 19 hours per week at $15 per hour.
