    Brooklyn Public Library’s Adult Literacy Department seeks to hire a P/T academic instructor to effectively deliver engaging Pre-HSE level instruction to a young adult aged (17-24) cohort in the East New York section of Brooklyn. The ideal candidate is a vibrant, creative, dynamic, civic minded facilitator who is capable of engaging and motivating students in a non-traditional learning environment.

    The academic instructor is responsible for designing and delivering thematic units of study; reflective of evidenced-based literacy and numeracy instructional approaches. In addition, the instructor will support the progression of and oversee a student centered, service learning process as well as work cooperatively and collaboratively with the rest of the Young Adult Literacy Program team to ensure academic success of the YALP participants.

    Responsibilities

    • Develop and deliver high interest academic instruction to a young adult population.
    • Guide and oversee a student led service learning process
    • Collaborate daily with YALP team to provide seamless support for the YALP participants
    • Maintain student records and confidentiality as required
    • Provide program support at recruitment, orientation and recognition events
    • Participate in ongoing training and professional development as assigned
    • Perform additional duties as required

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field, 2 years teaching or facilitation experience required. MA/MS a plus.
    • Lively, energetic personality with a genuine interest and dedication to working exclusively with a young adult population.
    • Experience with curriculum development with a specific focus on thematic units of study
    • Superior interpersonal, verbal, written and organizational skills
    • Working knowledge of the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assessment and the NYS High School Equivalency Exam (TASC).
    • Must be available during the daytime hours Monday – Wednesday and Fridays

     This is a grant funded position. The pay rate is $38.00 an hour /19 hours a week. The work schedule will be:

    Mondays and Tuesdays: 9:30am to 2:30pm

    Wednesdays: 10am to 2:00pm

    Fridays: 10am to 3pm

    The YALP instructor reports to the Young Adult Literacy Coordinator.
