Brooklyn Public Library’s Literacy Department seeks to hire a P/T College and Career Coach to serve as a guide for a young adult aged (17-24) cohort through the complex world of college and career preparation. The Coach will be responsible for designing and implementing interactive workshops that will prepare young people for the college experience, specific career sectors and the application of transferable skills via a capstone project.
The Coach must have foundational knowledge of the challenges faced by underemployed, urban youth in a competitive 21st century job market and have creative ideas of how to develop useful employment skills. The Coach will also lead the cohorts through a College Preparatory pathway by increasing student exposure to the college choice process, financial aid and scholarship options, and learning to draft personal statements. In addition, the Coach will complement the career readiness component of the work by various means including introducing the cohort to an array of inspiring professionals.
The ideal candidate for this position will have a balance of high expectations coupled with dedicated support for the students, a growth mindset, a strong work ethic and approaches the work with maturity, humility and of course, a sense of humor. The Pathways Coach reports to the Young Adult Literacy Coordinator.
Required documents: In addition to a cover letter and reume, a writing sample is requred. Please submit a sample email requesting a guest to visit the YALP classroom. The email should be a compelling piece that captures the mutual benefits the visit would have on both the guest and the students and would inspire a professional to agree to the visit.
This is a grant funded, part time position. Salary is $30.00 per hour/19 hours a week.
Work Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday 10am to 1:30pm & Wednesday and Friday 10am to 4pm
