    Brooklyn Public Library seeks someone passionate about local community organizing for our new Community Engagement Coordinator. This role is part of BPL’s Government and Community Relations Department, which works to ensure that elected officials, community leaders, community groups and library advocatesour supporters and partners in government understand the critical role BPL plays in lives of Brooklynites of all ages and is responsible for enhancing and managing BPL’s relationships with elected officials, community leaders, community groups and library advocates.


    The Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for coordinatinge the activities of the Friends Groups at BPL. These volunteer groups play a vital role in fundraising, advocating and volunteering, advocating and fundraising for programs and services at neighborhood branches in Brooklyn neighborhoods. There are currently 30 active and forming Friends Groups at branches across Brooklyn. These groups plan and execute projects and fundraisers to support BPL and their local branches, develop relationships with local businesses and residents in Brooklyn communities, raise positive public awareness, and generate opportunities for increased funding for BPL branches. The Coordinator will oversee the existing Groups’ activities and help with projects of all sizes, from planning a bake sale to starting a community garden. The Coordinator will also organize new Friends Groups throughout Brooklyn.


    The Community Engagement Coordinator will report to BPL’s Director of Community Engagement.


    • Serve as principal liaison between Friends Groups and BPL staff, both Central Administration staff and branch staff
    • Implement a proactive community outreach strategy focused on Friends Groups and their fundraising, volunteer and advocacy initiatives
    • Coordinate Friends Group activities and provide them with critical administrative support
    • Reactivate inactive Friends Groups and proactively cultivate new Friends Group leadership
    • Track metrics for success for Friends Groups and Friends leadership
    • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with community leaders and key local stakeholders
    • Represent the Library at public events
    • Plan events, including trainings and thank you events for members of Friends Groups
    • Attend Friends meetings across Brooklyn
    • Assist with other activities in the Government and Community Relations Department


    • Bachelor’s degree 
    • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a related field
    • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal & written communications skills
    • Experience as a leader, motivator and team builder
    • Experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders
    • Experience working with Brooklyn stakeholders a plus
    • Experience in advocacy, community organizing, or strategic outreach
    • Ability/willingness to attend frequent evening and weekend meetings and events
    • Ability to travel to different branches across the system
