    Applications are currently being solicited for Program Leaders for Team up To read, a fun weekend reading workshop for children ages 5-9 and their families. The Team up to Read (TUTR) program leader will provide a 6-session series of programs designed to enhance reading fluency and comprehension in designated branches of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) on the following dates:

    October 13, 20, 27 and November 3, 10 and 17, 2018 on a fee-for-service basis.

     

    All program leaders must also attend the training session scheduled on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 1-5 pm. Each program leader must be willing to travel to their assigned branch, and be available to present programs on the assigned dates.  A three-hour commitment is required for each session. 

     

    Stipend: $100 per session & $100 to attend the training session.

    Responsibilities

    The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. All personnel may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.

    • Use the TUTR curriculum, plan & conduct programs for children 5-9 years of age & their parents or caregivers.
    • Use books and other resources, facilitate inquiry around the concept on which the hands-on activity is based
    • Encourage children to build skills and test out their new knowledge with activities. 
    • Share tips & resourceful information with parents on incorporating reading practice in the home environment.
    • Work with students to assess reading level by taking running records
    • Provide feedback to TUTR Project Manager on parent involvement & participation, curriculum, books & materials, and conduct assessment surveys as needed.
    • Set up & clean-up program materials.
    • Gather information & surveys from participants for an evaluation of this project.
    • Coordinate with the assigned branch to prepare for the program ahead of each session.
    • Communicate regularly with the TUTR Project Manager.
    • Report any problems to library staff overseeing the program.

    Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Enrollment in or completion of a graduate education program desirable, but not essential; experience in Literacy instruction strongly preferred 
    • Experience leading school-age programs with 6-10 year olds
    • Knowledge of literacy-based education practices
    • Knowledge of how to take a running record to assess reading levels a plus
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Fluency in Spanish/Haitian Creole/Cantonese/Mandarin/Bengali/Urdu/Polish/Russian a plus
    • Flexibility and willingness to travel
    • Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed
