Brooklyn Public Library’s Strategic Planning Department is seeking a problem solver with lots of curiosity and great attention to detail. This position will provide the opportunity to learn about current library initiatives as well as how to manipulate large data sets through data analysis and visualization software - namely Tableau. Interns will gain an understanding of the types of data captured by public libraries and why, develop data visualizations and work with staff focus groups, pilot groups and use other methods to iterate, test, and integrate user feedback into our designs.
Working with the Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives, Project Management, and Data Analysts the Data Project Intern will assist in building relevant data visualizations for staff system wide using a combination of BPL’s and public data. These visualizations are used to bolster librarians’ understandings of their neighborhoods, help staff to plan community-responsive programming, and to evaluate strengths and weaknesses in areas like collection development, circulation, and wifi use.
Interns will participate in departmental meetings to gain an understanding of organizational culture. This will prepare interns to create visualizations that foster collaboration among staff and promote the use of data in project planning and decision making.

Although a skills match is top priority, preference is given to current graduate students or those with/pursuing advanced degrees in public policy, government, social science, information science, or design. Candidates should be able to commit to at least 15 hours a week for fifteen weeks over the fall semester to the internship. All internships come with a competitive stipend and have a strong learning component that can be used for academic credit.
