    Applications are solicited ASAP for BPL’s Afterschool Educator position serving students grades Pre-k through High School. The Afterschool Educators will provide homework/reading support and educational activities/games in designated branches of the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) beginning January 2019, on a fee-for-service basis. These Afterschool Educators will be placed at Cypress Hills library.

     

    Each Afterschool Educator must be willing to travel to their assigned branch, and be available to provide homework/reading support and educational activities/games on the branches’ assigned days and times.  A two-hour commitment is required for each session. Educators are asked to make a commitment to this program until the end of the school year in June.

    Responsibilities

    • Assists students (pre-K through high school) one-on-one and in small groups with assignments in reading, math, science, social studies, and other topics, providing direction, clarity, and understanding.
    • Instructs children in the use of directories, indexes, and other reference materials.
    • Promote the use of library resources by referring children to an on-staff specialist, when appropriate.
    • Provides informal reading support and assistance to students in the library.
    • Assists students finding and reading “Just Right” books at the library to promote independent reading.
    • Creates and leads engaging games with students that promote skills in literacy and math.
    • Develops or implements creative and fun learning activities for students that use technology, such as tablets, PCs, and other devices available.
    • Communicates regularly with East New York Reads Library Coordinator and tracks data, such as number of participants and participant’s homework needs/inquiries.
    • Reports any problems to East New York Reads Library Coordinator and library staff overseeing the program. 
    • Sets-up and cleans-up program materials. 
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • Enrollment in or completion of a graduate library or education program desirable but not essential.
    • Knowledge of the common core and best practices in teaching for grades Pre-k through High School in math and literacy.
    • Knowledge of methods of instruction used in NYC schools, such as balanced literacy, Fountas and Pinnel reading levels, sight words (Dolch), Fry's List, and the Common Core.
    • Ability to create and lead fun learning games/activities with manipulatives and other learning tools.
    • Ability to multitask and oversee multiple students in busy, informal afterschool environment.
    • Familiarity with technology and educational programs used to support student learning.
    • Receptive to guidance and instruction by library staff.
    • Experience working with various age groups and diverse ethnicities.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Flexibility and willingness to travel.
    • Fluency in Spanish or Bengali a plus. 
    • Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed
    • All offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a background check, & physical exam.

    Stipend: $25 per hour, 1 day- 2 hours a week.
