  • Overview

    The Brooklyn Public Library is seeking a  Program Assistant to assist WIOA program participants earn their HSE diploma through one of the four pathways. In addition, facilitate computer-based learning and support online learning at BPL Central Adult Learning Center.  He/she will be responsible for coaching students, providing computer basics instruction, stressing the importance of students becoming independent users of computer resources who will transition to HSE, higher education and workplace training. The Program Assistant, under the supervision of the Learning Center Literacy Advisor, monitors and supports computer-based instruction for adult learners engaged in Pre HSE instruction to improve reading comprehension, writing and mathematics in an innovative, technology- and resource-rich learning environment.


    • Facilitate computer-based learning; coach students, assisting adult learners in becoming independent users of computer resources.
    • Provide computer basics instruction and workshops; introduce students to workplace technology skills
    • Engage students in a learning community and facilitate reading and writing instruction; collaborate with instructors and students to support and enhance lesson plans with a focus on developing reading and writing skills, English language literacy skills and workplace literacy skills.
    • Working with Pre HSE instructors/tutors and Learning Center Advisors, implement curriculum for web-based ABE/HSE instruction
    • Assist with student assessment activities, including online assessment and student self-assessment rubrics, checklists and portfolios
    • Record-keeping & data entry of student attendance and documentation of student progress as required
    • Assists with technical troubleshooting.
    • Assist with day to day duties such as HSE screenings, registration, recruitment, retention, orientation, and assessments 
    • Participate in staff development initiatives


    • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required
    • Strong knowledge of ABE/HSE skills to assist students and instructors, computer software applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
    • Familiarity with MS Office and/or Google docs a plus
    • Experience working in an customer service oriented environment
    • Strong motivation to keep up to date on new technologies
    • Knowledge of instructional software utilized with Smartboards and ipads; online technology such as listservs, wikis, blogs, and online learning, a plus
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment
    • Strong organizational skill
    • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and Saturdays

    This is a part-time grant funded position. Hours for this position are up to 19 hours per week.
