    Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) seeks an intern with an interest in technology and experience working with youth to assist the Best Buy Teen Tech Center Coordinator and support the youth members of the center. Best Buy Teen Tech Center, an interactive learning space for teens opened in early 2019. It is located on the second floor of the Kings Highway Library. It is comprised of 1,460 square feet and includes workstations, collaboration areas, technical equipment and a music studio. The center is an after-school space where members 13 -18 years old can explore, create, and develop skills through the use of technology. Teens develop projects such as: creating art, producing music and animations; designing science simulations and mobile applications; writing and illustrating interactive poetry, stories and films; building kinetic sculptures and robotic constructions; and designing their own 3D worlds and games.

     

    The intern will have a strong background in education and/or youth development, leadership experience, and enthusiasm for creating a fun, welcoming, and safe learning experience for teens.

     

     

    Responsibilities

    • Work with members to develop creative skills through the use of technology
    • Assist with program planning and prep
    • Assist with inventory and maintenance of technology in the space
    • Provide members with support and resources about career and college opportunities
    • Organize and implement special projects
    • Facilitate workshops
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • A High School diploma or equivalent is required
    • Prior experience in a technology field is a plus
    • Enthusiasm for and commitment to providing excellent learning experiences for our community’s youth
    • Experience working with teens, diverse audiences & multiple stakeholders
    • Knowledge of one or more of the Adobe Creative Suite programs
    • Knowledge of best practices for disability inclusion and special needs
    • Able to maintain a high energy level and positive attitude on a daily basis
    • Punctual and able to accomplish daily tasks independently and without prompting
    • Able to create and follow routines, anticipate and address group needs, and solve problems that arise
    • Able to model positive communication and foster understanding among diverse audience
    • Creative, flexible, patient, enthusiastic
    • Balance of fun and approachable, responsible and authoritative
    • Organized, detail-oriented, excellent time management, excellent judgement
    • Ability to learn computer skills quickly

    The intern will be expected to work the following schedule:

    Tuesday: 2:30pm-6pm

    Wednesday: 2:30pm-6pm

    Thursday: 3:30pm-7:30pm

    Friday: 1:30pm-5:30pm

    Saturday: 12:30pm-4:30pm

     

    This is a paid internship position from September, 2019-June,2020. Hours for this position are 19-hours per week at $20 per hour.
