    Brooklyn Public Library's (BPL) Outreach Services department is seeking an enthusiastic individual to serve as the Digital Project Assistant for Our Streets, Our Stories oral history project. Our Streets, Our Stories is an ongoing oral history project that seeks to explore the Brooklyn that is and the Brooklyn that was, from the words of the community that lives here.

     

    The Digital Project Assistant will utilize applicable analytical, assessment, archival, and creative skills, to support and develop the inclusive approach of BPL ongoing digital audio project. The project is part of a larger effort by BPL, to create a repository of discoverable recordings, and to preserve the value of all Brooklyn voices.

     

    The Digital Project Assistant will be equipped with Zoom mobile recording equipment to reach patrons with stories across BPL 59 branches and locations, and offsite locations. Responsibilities included organizing branch-led audio events, recording interviews, digitizing and cataloging audio WAV and MP3 files, and creating metadata to describe the audio materials. Documentation and assessment will be conducted throughout the life of the project.

     

    The Digital Project Assistant has a high impact on the success of Our Streets, Our Stories encouraging the public use of the DAM and reuse of assets.

    Responsibilities

    • Coordinate with BPL staff and local community members to plan and host oral history events
    • Travel with mobile audio equipment to and from BPL branches, via public transportation and car service
    • Serve as an advocate and promoter of the oral history to the public, BPL staff, and Friends groups
    • Create, update, and enhance metadata for the digitized items into BPL’s digital collection management platform
    • Conduct and digitally record oral history interviews, and process sound recordings through Audacity, Soundcloud, Tumblr, and iTunes
    • Conduct assessment and track feedback, statistics, and marketing

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s Degree required
    • Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science or pursuing coursework to obtain the degree, preferred
    • Leadership skills and the ability to take ownership of a project within a complex administrative structure
    • Proven proficiency in project management, communication, and outreach activities, including public event planning, promotion, and social media.
    • Working knowledge of digitization systems, standards and technology, and familiarity with copyright as it relates to libraries
    • Experience with digital audio recording and uploading to SoundCloud, Libsyn or similar platforms
    • High level of organizational skill with keen attention to detail
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a variety of project stakeholder
    • Demonstrated experience in service-based profession, especially librarianship analysis of user needs and responding to needs.
    • Working knowledge of library/archival metadata standards and practices. Some cataloging experience or coursework.
    • Database search and retrieval working independently and in teams
    • Effective professional communication (in-person and virtual).Learning Objectives

    This is a part-time position with a 19-hour work week at $20.00 per hour.
