    Brooklyn Public Library is seeking one part-time Brain Building at BPL Assistant to work as part of a grant from the Robin Hood Foundation to develop a brain-building storytime and conduct outreach in Brownsville and Bushwick at Brooklyn Public Library. The successful candidate for this position will work with the outreach and program associates, Youth and Family Services staff program partners, children’s librarians, and branch staff. The schedule is 19 hours per week for an 8 month grant period (depending on start date) beginning in the fall of 2019 and continuing to the end of March 2020 with possibility of renewal. 

    Responsibilities

    • Answer phone calls and voicemails; make calls to partners and program participants, manage texting to program participants
    • Track participation in the program
    • If a bilingual candidate, assist with oral translation
    • Assist with preparation for programs, marketing and outreach events
    • Occasional attendance at marketing, outreach, or special events outside normal work schedule
    • Distribute flyers and brochures out in various neighborhoods, in businesses, organizations, etc.
    • Help manage Facebook and social media accounts
    • Enter, analyze, and compile data for team members and grant reports
    • Design notices, posters, certificates, and/or flyers
    • Process contracts and invoices
    • Assist with ordering and tracking supplies and materials for the program
    • Attend necessary department and program meetings and trainings
    • Interpret and implement BPL policy
    • Required to work some evenings and weekends, as needed.
    • Perform other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma required.  Bachelor’s degree in Education or enrollment in an early childhood education or library school program preferred
    • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
    • Excellent written, verbal, and customer service skills
    • Ability to communicate clearly and with professionalism in person, by phone and email
    • Experience working with parents and young children a plus
    • Extremely detail-oriented, organized, and thorough with keen attention to deadlines and timelines
    • Ability to prioritize and stay on task; keeping short-term and long- term to do list and an up to date calendar
    • Ability to self-direct, take initiative, think ahead to get the job done well
    • General computer and tech troubleshooting skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Google Drive, Social Media), or ability/willingness to learn quickly
    • Knowledge of library services desirable
    • General experience working with the public and diverse communities

    Physical Demands

    • Able to lift loads up to 25 pounds, willingness to travel between Bushwick, Brownsville, and Central libraries, other BPL locations, as well program partner locations.
    • May require the ability to transport outreach materials and a laptop & projector as needed
    • Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed
