    Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the sixth largest library system in the United States, with 60 neighborhood libraries located throughout the Borough of Brooklyn.  BPL offers free programs and services for all ages and stages of life, including a large selection of books in more than 30 languages, author talks, literacy programs and public computers.

     

    Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning seeks a part-time Digital Literacy Instructor to teach computer basics to adults enrolled in English Language classes. Facility with computers is vital to accessing employment and opportunity in the community. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementation of digital literacy lessons encompassing computing fundamentals, key software applications, Internet communications and usage, as well as computer safety and ethics. The goal for participants attending this course is preparation for IC3 certification. Instruction will move at a level and pace that meets the needs of the English Language Learner. The Digital Literacy Instructor reports to the ESOL Program Coordinator, and collaborates or co-teaches with the ESOL instructor teaching English Language skills.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Instruct adult English Language Learners in the digital literacy course(s) in accordance with the approved curriculum
    • Deliver class instructions according to the course syllabus
    • Prepare lesson plans and supplemental class materials
    • Collaborate, or co-teach with the ESOL instructor teaching English Language skills
    • Liaison with key staff at Learning Centers and Libraries
    • Discuss with course participants their concerns and/or problems directly or indirectly related to the learning experience
    • Conduct assessment of participant progress
    • Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessment, surveys, data, etc.
    • Attend staff meetings; participate in professional development as required
    • Performs other duties as assigned



    Qualifications

    • BA degree is required 
    • Master's degree or Certificate in TESOL or IC3 is a plus
    • 3 years of Computer Training and Teaching experience
    • Excellent communication, presentation and organizational skills
    • Experience with multi-cultural adult learners
    • Extensive knowledge of PC/MAC hardware and software
    • Experience teaching English Language Learners
    • Ability to interpret and use data to inform instruction
    • Travel to library/class locations required; ability to bend, lift and carry computer equipment and totes is required.

    Please note that this position is Contract position. Hours for this position are 6hours/week +1 hour for administrative work.
