  • Overview

    The Vice President, Public Safety & Support services provides innovative and strategic leadership in the delivery of security services at Brooklyn Public Library’s large multi-site system. Services include security operations, peace officer management, public facing programs, and tactical and strategic planning. The VP also has responsibility for a fleet of vehicles, mail operations and a passport operation with offices in 3 library locations.  
    Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Finance and Administration, the VPs responsibilities include compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, rules, directives, and best practices pertaining to a library security program. In addition to the day-to-day to security operations and property protection, this role is responsible for disaster preparedness, system-wide evacuation, crisis and incident response planning, access and alarm control systems. The VP leads a dynamic team of employees to ensure a safe, healthy and welcoming library for both patrons and staff.  


    The Vice President serves as a member of the Library’s Executive Management Team. The Vice President, Public Safety & Support Services has the responsibility for recruitment, leading, evaluating and managing a diverse population of over 100 full and part-time union and non-union departmental staff, including senior managers.   


    • Plan, develop, organize, and manage a complete security program and services 
    • Define quality standards and internal instructions/procedures for the work 
    • Collaborate with senior security managers to establish and implement, operational procedures for security activities, traffic control guarding/patrolling physical property, and investigation of accidents 
    • Investigate criminal acts in partnership with relevant law enforcement 
    • Confer with representatives of executive management to aid in formulation of policies, to determine need for security programs, and to coordinate security programs with other activities 
    • Confer with representatives of local, state and federal public safety agencies to ensure cooperation/coordination concerning security activities  
    • Develop and supervise a staffing system and ensure efficient utilization of available staff to provide coverage 
    • Ensure full compliance with all relevant code requirements established for the public safety and security of public buildings 
    • In partnership with HR create learning pathways for new employees and continued development of existing employees 
    • Collaborate with Director of Customer Experience and Director of Neighborhood Services to build customer service values within the Department of Public Safety that promote mutual understanding and trust between public safety staff and members of the population being served 
    • Ensure effective use of a fire alarm system including appropriate responses to alarms and maintenance of relevant reports, records, and files 
    • Develop and maintain database of incidents related to safety and security 


    • A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of at least 7 years of increased responsibilities in these areas: planning, organizing, directing and supervising safety and security activities are required 
    • Non-for-profit or higher education experience in a multi-site organization is a plus
    • Valid NYS Driver’s license 
    • Fire Safety Certification

    • Knowledge of principles and techniques for providing for public safety and security for persons and property 
    • Ability to recognize the need for and carry out continuing improvement of the safety and security program 
    • Ability to prepare and analyze oral and written reports, decisions, conclusions, or recommendations that are logically organized, clear, concisely written, and unbiased 
    • Ability to conduct investigations in relation to safety and security 
    • Ability to develop effective work methods and teams as well as provide direction for work performance 
    • Proven track record of significant leadership skills, practices and techniques, while managing a professional staff in a complex, multi-site organization 
    • An ability to work effectively and collegially within a large, complex urban public library system and to negotiate effectively with a wide range of constituencies 
    • A dedication to upholding customer service values and an ability to demonstrate those skills to staff and the public 
    • Demonstrated digital fluency 
    • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with patrons and community partners
