The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program is seeking Program Assistant to assist WIOA program participants earn their HSE diploma through one of the four pathways (TASC, Regents, NEDP, etc.). In addition, co-facilitate small group instruction in a mixed level classroom, provide consistent and responsive feedback and support to classroom instructors at one of BPL’s Adult Learning Center.  He/she will be responsible for coaching students, work collaboratively with instructional staff to ensure their needs are being met. The Program Assistant, under the guidance of the Adult Learning Center Literacy Advisor/Floater Literacy Advisor, monitors and supports participant’s progress and work collaboratively with instructional staff to ensure program quality and goals are being met.


  • Engage students in a learning community and co-facilitate reading and writing instruction within Pre-HSE/HSE classroom; collaborate with instructors and students to support and enhance lesson plans with a focus on developing reading and writing skills, English language literacy skills and workplace literacy skills
  • Working with Pre HSE/HSE instructors and Learning Center Advisors to support needs of participants in order to reach their goal of obtaining their HSE diploma
  • Assist with student assessment duties, including online assessment and student self-assessment rubrics, checklists and portfolios
  • Record-keeping & data entry of student attendance and documentation of student progress as required
  • Assist participants with applying for the TASC exam and referrals
  • Assist with day to day duties such as HSE screenings, registration, recruitment, retention, orientation, assessments, and follow-ups 
  • Participate in staff development initiatives


  • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required
  • Strong knowledge of ABE/HSE skills to support students and instructors, computer software applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Experience working in an adult education learning environment
  • Strong motivation to keep up to date on new technologies
  • Knowledge of instructional software utilized with Smartboards and ipads; online technology such as listservs, wikis, blogs, and online learning, a plus
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Bilingual (Spanish) language skills preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and Saturdays to meet the needs of the participants

This is a part-time grant funded position. Hours for this position are up to 19 hours per week at $17 per hour.

Tentative schedule for the position is: Mornings 10-2, Evenings 5-9, and Saturdays 10-2. However, please note that schedule is subject to change based the department needs.
