The Brooklyn Public Library Adult Learning Program (ESOL) is seeking a Program Assistant to assist program participants improve their English skills and earn an industry recognized credential in our Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education ESOL classes. In addition, support learners in-person and/or via Zoom, provide consistent and responsive feedback and support to classroom instructors and participants at one of BPL’s branches. They will be responsible for coaching and motivating participants, assisting learners with Google classroom, and other electronic tools. The Program Assistant, under the guidance of the ESOL coordinator, monitors, data entry and supports participant’s progress and work collaboratively with instructional staff to ensure program quality and goals are being met.


  • Create class rosters, monitor student attendance, assessment scores, and enter data for IELCE ESOL classes.
  • Work with instructors and coordinator to support needs of adult learners in order to reach their goal of improving their English and/or earn a credential
  • Assist with student assessment duties, including BEST Plus assessments and student self-assessment rubrics, checklists and portfolios
  • Record-keeping & data entry of student attendance and documentation of student progress as required in ASISTS
  • Assist participants technicial support
  • Assist with day to day duties such as registration, recruitment, retention, orientation, assessments, and follow-ups
  • Participate in staff development initiatives


  • Minimum of High School Diploma and/or Equivalent required
  • Strong knowledge with computer software applications, including Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and some experience coaching and motivating ESOL adult learners
  • Strong motivation to keep up to date on new technologies
  • Knowledge of instructional online technology such as Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom, a plus
  • Able to work collaboratively with lead teacher and passionate about working with ESOL adult learners in 1-3 ESOL classes on-site and remotely
  • Excellent communication, strong organizational, and problem solving skills  
  • Hours: Up to 19 hours per week. Must be able to work a varied schedule on site or remotely, including two evenings and Saturdays. 
  • Salary: $17 per hour
