BPL’s Marketing & Communications department is seeking a Senior Designer to work within our Art & Design team. This position will report to the Creative Director. The ideal candidate must: 

  • have a great eye for design
  • be skilled designing for both digital media and print
  • be up-to-date on current design tools & standards
  • be comfortable working independently 
  • have outstanding communication and organizational skills 
  • be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage their time efficiently
  • have strong project management skills 

About Art & Design 

As part of the Marketing & Communications department at Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), the Art & Design team is charged with developing and maintaining the Library’s visual brand across a variety of print and digital mediums. A full-service in-house design studio, we handle a broad range of projects for the Library and its branches and divisions, manage outside vendors, and work collaboratively within Marketing on creative for department-driven initiatives. We are passionate about the mission of the library and are dedicated to bringing the joy and wonder of the library experience to Brooklynites through beautiful, accessible design.  


Work Site 

 This position is hybrid, with three days a week on-site required.

  • Work closely with the Creative Director to understand goals, objectives and visual direction/strategy of the client
  • Design in a variety of styles reflective of BPL’s brand, throughout a variety of media and formats:  Digital assets for the website, social media, and email marketing, printed collateral, promotional items, signage, etc. 
  • Ensure that the design and execution adhere to BPL brand guidelines 
  • Work closely with writers, production team members, and/or the web development team to ensure projects stay on schedule, on budget, and delivered on time 
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, critiques, and brainstorming sessions 
  • Assist in other office related needs as requested by the Creative Director 


  • 3+ years graphic design experience; previous in-house, agency/studio or not-for-profit environments preferred
  • Understands how to keep and maintain brand consistency. Experience with digital/web design, email marketing and social media. Web UX/UI, HTML and CSS or other coding experience a plus.
  • Comfortable working in Adobe CS (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
  • Familiarity with animation/motion graphics and basic video editing (After Effects, GIF design) a plus
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills, both written and spoken
  • Bachelor’s degree (or advanced degree) in art or graphic design
