Overview

Brooklyn Public Library is seeking an Environmental Community Organizer to engage Greenpoint residents in environmental and health issues. This new, one-year grant funded part-time position is supervised by BPL’s Environmental Justice Coordinator and based at Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center.

 

The Organizer will be responsible for building relationships with Greenpoint residents, especially within the Polish-speaking communities, to share environmental and health information and resources. The primary focus of this organizing will initially be around the Meeker Avenue Plume, which the EPA added to the Superfund program’s National Priorities List in 2022. The Organizer will work closely with the Library’s existing coalition of neighborhood environmental advocacy groups and City, State and Federal agency partners, as well as build new relationships, to ensure Greenpoint residents are fully aware of all the information and resources available to them.

Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with Greenpoint residents by visiting community organizations, attending community meetings, direct outreach via canvassing and tabling, using social media and other promotional tools, and through other methods.
  • Represent BPL to neighborhood coalitions, advisory groups, and community meetings that focus both on the Meeker Avenue Plume Superfund Site as well as other neighborhood environmental issues.
  • Liaise with elected officials’ staff to identify gaps in environmental outreach the Library can help close
  • Share environmental and health information and resources from BPL and the Library’s partners with Greenpoint residents, both in the Library and through canvassing and tabling around the neighborhood.
  • Collaborate with BPL departments to create Library outreach materials, translating materials into Polish as appropriate.
  • Assist in environmental programs at the Library
  • Track and report outreach data as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required, BA preferred.
  • Successfully demonstrated outreach or organizing experience appropriate to the position.
  • Independent self-starter who takes initiative and can work without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of Greenpoint, its community and environmental issues
  • Bi-lingual in English and Polish
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including the ability to serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for the Library
  • Comfortable speaking with diverse audiences, including those at religious centers, community centers, senior centers and beyond.
  • Tech savvy and familiar with social media
  • Ability to work well independently and collaborate with BPL staff and external partners on outreach.
  • Required to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Creativity, flexibility, and initiative in accommodating community and staff needs
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.

This is a one-year grant funded position. The work week is up to 19 hours per week. The salary range is $30 - $35/hr.
