Overview

Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) uses data visualization to streamline and democratize the distribution of data at all levels of the organization to drive data-influenced decision making.  By creating dashboards that communicate accurate data insights we enable confident, effective decision making and ensure that reporting (internal and external) is done consistently and efficiently.

Reporting to the Director, Data Analytics & Strategic Research in the Strategy Department, this position brings together internal data from multiple sources as well as external data to provide dashboards that support branch level and system wide initiatives. In addition, this position will use data from the dashboards, supplemented with additional data as needed, to fulfill external reporting requirements to state and local governments and other entities as required. External reporting requirements include: the Mayor’s Management Report; New York State Annual Report; New York State Five-year Plan of Service; the Public Library Data Service, and more.

Responsibilities

  • Report & data maintenance and development – Deliver data and reports monthly and on an ad-hoc basis for internal and external stakeholders using tools including Tableau (Desktop, Server, and Prep), Arc/QGIS, Python, R, SQL, Excel, Google Sheets, etc.
  • Expert guidance – Understand underlying library goals, initiatives, and challenges to leverage analytics and visualization tools that present information in a way that both tells a story and drives fact-based decision making.
  • Analysis – Generate ideas for exploratory analyses to shape projects and provide recommendations for actions.
  • Proactive request management – Think beyond individual requests and plan for future usage through data/dashboard organization, accuracy, and structure.
  • Data curation – Organize and integrate data from a variety of sources for incorporation into data extracts for use in reports, drawing on multiple data sets.
  • Deepening the data culture – Work with staff from all levels of the organization to train them on using tools developed.  Coordinate a Data Steering Committee to provide guidance on where additional dashboards, training and other supports are needed.  Support/train staff in other departments who are creating dashboards using Tableau and other tools.  Ensure organizational standards are followed and data consistency is maintained.
  • External reporting – Manage the process for submitting reports (annually and quarterly) to the State of New York, City of New York, Library trustees, Library leadership, and the Public Library Association, among others.  Track deadlines for each, coordinate with other departments to gather data needed, get approvals needed from management or the board, submit data in the format required and create dashboards that allow the comparison of reports year over year.  Work to streamline the process by incorporating new datasets needed into existing workflows.
  • Work with BPL leadership to set new organizational performance targets
