The Digital Literacy Outreach Services Associate will provide technology assistance for older adults, including those with visual or physical challenges, that enables them to connect to programs, services, and materials within the Brooklyn Public Library system.  The Digital Literacy Outreach Service Associate will also work with Library staff to broaden technology services to older adults, including assistive technology awareness.  The Digital Literacy Outreach Services Associate will lead and coordinate with partners to provide workshops on technology for older adults to both the older adult public as well as to staff.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates individual technology assistance appointments with older adults to include basic computer skills, navigating email, smartphone usage, downloading books, accessing virtual library programs, Microsoft Office, etc. 
  • Lead regular workshops for older adults in library branches or Central Library on navigating databases, using email, internet safety.
  • Maintain inventory control and support patron and staff access for Technology for All grant funded devices.
  • Serve as point of contact for Outreach Services Chromebook and mi-fi lending program.
  • Answer patron phone calls to Services for Older Adults to provide technology assistance.
  • Provide guidance, information and assistance to Library staff regarding technology assistance to older adults, including assistive technology.
  • Coordinates with community partners (i.e. OATS) and library staff to schedule technology programs for older adults.
  • Provide concrete referral to internal library services and resources
  • Collect program statistics and provide report as needed, including one-on-one appointments, information sessions, and technology counseling sessions.
  • Participate in all relevant trainings and meetings. 
  • Follow trends in technology for older adults, including assistive technology.
  • Travel to Central Library, New Utrecht Library, and other branches when needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree required
  • Strong facility with computer software applications
  • Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse public
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Strong organization and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team and on independent projects.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and reliability.
  • Customer service experience preferred, especially with older adults.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual preferred
  • Knowledge of assistive technology, such as NVDA screen reader and VoiceOver a plus.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology
  • Understanding of library policies and procedures a plus

    Salary: This is a part-time grant funded position through 4/25/2025 . Hours for this position are up to 19 hours per week at $25 per hour.

    This position is a combination on-site at Central Library, New Utrecht Library, and other branches as needed as well as some telecommute.

    Tentative schedule for the position is: 10am-4pm, Tuesday through Thursday. However, please note that schedule is subject to change based on the department needs.
