Brooklyn Public Library's Adult Learning Program are seeking dedicated and skilled HSE instructors to prepare participants for the workforce and to improve their skills on the Test Assessing Basic Education (TABE) assessment.

The HSE instructor will develop, revise, and instructional plans to meet the needs of the participants. Classroom instruction incorporates self-paced, computerized instruction, small group learning exercises, videos, and provides classroom instruction in a variety of fields at several levels.  The ability to develop lessons using extensive writing and reading practice in the TABE Mastery books and using the participant's TABE skills analysis. We are seeking someone who is passionate about making a difference in their community by developing adults to their fullest potential.

 

Responsibilities

  • Participate in curriculum planning and ability to evaluate needs of students
  • Deliver effective instructions and have an appetite for utilizing data to improve services
  • Work collaboratively with the teaching assistant and case manager to ensure participant's needs are met 
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans, integrating technology
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention
  • Attend a minimum of 14 hours of professional development via NYC RAEN/NYSED
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelors degree in Education or a related field
  • 2+ years of related teaching experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Preferred experience with presenting/facilitating TABE prep to adults from diverse backgrounds and communities
  • Must have familiarity with the current CUNY Career Kits & HSE curriculum.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to perform well
  • Strong Proficiency in the use of office equipment including computers, data projector, smart boards, smart TVs, printers and copiers
  • Be willing to participate in professional development workshops and/or certification programs to remain competent and relevant in the field of adult education.
  • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and weekends

This is a class (6 hours a week). There will be 6 hours of classroom instruction and participants would be required to complete at least 3-9 hours of online learning.

 

This is a part time position. The salary for this position is $40/ hour up to 6 hours/week.  This is a grant funded position through June 30, 2025. Position renewal based on performance.

Classes are held at various branches/Adult Learning Centers.  Schedules are as follows:

Day

Mon./Wed. 10am-1pm

 

Evening

Tues./Thurs. 5pm-8pm

 

Saturday

10am-4pm
