Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is seeking enthusiastic candidates to fill the role of Outreach Ambassador. The candidates must have excellent outreach, organizational, and communication skills and be comfortable engaging with individuals and groups of all abilities and from a wide range of backgrounds. 

 

Outreach Ambassadors will provide information about community resources to people in the library and who attend library programsAmbassadors will provide referral and support in particular to immigrant communities and participants in BPL English Language Learning programs. Referrals will be made in-person and via telephone, email and textOutreach Ambassadors will provide administrative support for BPL community outreach initiatives, and collect data about the number and types of referrals given.   

 

The Outreach Ambassador must be prepared to travel across the borough to build awareness of the Library’s programs and services. This is a hands-on, active role that requires in-person communication and engagement at a wide range of indoor and outdoor environments including public libraries, city shelters and other housing facilities, and community events. 

 

This is a grant funded position until 6/30/26,  that position reports to the Immigrant Services Coordinator in the Outreach Department. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct outreach at a wide range of year-round community events in Brooklyn. 
  • Undertake a range of outreach activities at BPL library locations, community organizations, and in public settings (both indoors and outdoors). 
  • Assist with maintaining a list of community programs and services including those local to neighborhoods served. 
  • Actively refer Library patrons to relevant Library programs, community organizations, and service providers. 
  • Plan, set-up equipment, and attend scheduled outreach events.   
  • Plan, promote, and present at information sessions both in person and virtually. 
  • Provide clear information about BPL services and programs at in-person and online settings.   
  • Collect data and assist with preparing reports. 
  • Collaborate with partners across BPL including the outreach team, branch library staff, and adult learning department to set up info sessions and tabling. 
  • Maintain up-to-date stakeholder contact information and help identify new opportunities for community referrals.  
  • Participate in relevant trainings and meetings. 
  • Perform related duties and work on special projects as required. 

 

Qualifications

  • High School degree required
  • 1-2 years relevant work experience preferred 
  • Personal and first hand experience with being a newcomer to New York City a plus. 
  • Excellent community outreach and engagement skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including the ability to present verbal information confidently to a range of audiences. 
  • Excellent detail management and organizational skills. 
  • Digitally literate and able to work and learn easily using technology. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team and on independent projects. 
  • Successfully demonstrated customer service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse public. 
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion 
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish, Chinese languages, Russian, Arabic, Kreyol, Wolof, French, or Ukrainian. 
  • Required to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel within the NYC Metro area.

 

This is a part-time position with a work schedule of up to 19 hours per week compensated at $23-25/hour
