Overview

The Adult literacy and learning department is seeking integrated education and training IELCE teachers to teach contextualized intermediate/advanced level classes. The IELCE teacher will collaborate with vocational instructors to ensure participants are equipped with skills to pass one of the following certifications: Digital Literacy, ServSafe Restaurant Suite and/or Front Desk/Hospitality while improving their English speaking skills utilizing work-place and civics content. The goal is for learners to improve their English speaking skills while earning an industry recognized certification to secure a job/career in the workforce.  

Responsibilities

  • Be part of an academic team responsible for presenting standard American English language to English-language learners
  • Engage students in a learning community and facilitate contextualized lessons based on the focus areas: food safety, digital literacy, and/or medical billing/assisting
  • Maintain, prepare, and upload Google Classroom assignments and weekly post for learners
  • Prepare course overview and lesson plans that use library resources using a civics-based instructional approach and the vocational curricula that is motivating and engaging with a focus on learning and progress
  • Knowledgeable of the CAL Best Plus and Best Literacy tests for IELCE learners of the Brooklyn Public Library and conference with learners as needed
  • Complete administrative duties in a timely manner
  • Participate in library and industry professional development and training; set individual learning and development goals and actively seek opportunities to further develop teaching practice
  • Work independently and collaboratively with an instructional (case manager, student advisor, and program assistant) team members to ensure learners are being met

Qualifications

  • BA/BS required. MA or certificate in TESOL a plus
  • Co-teaching experience and vocational teaching experience in culinary, digital literacy, and/or health industries
  • Online teaching experience using Google Classroom and Zoom
  • Able to collaborate with instructional team to ensure learners needs are being met and help alleviate any barriers to learning
  • Strong Proficiency in the use of office equipment including computers, data projector, smart boards, smart TVs, printers and copiers.
  • Ability to populate and manipulate software supporting word processing, spreadsheet, database management, network management, desktop publishing, and Internet navigation applications
  • Ability to perform general clerical functions including maintaining accurate records and compiling information and statistics
  • Excellent organizational and customer service skills
  • Creative and ability to solve problems with a strong commitment to adult literacy and learning
  • Must be able to work varied schedule, including evenings and weekends 

Please note that this is a part-time position, up to 12 hours a week. Pay rate is $40 per hour.

**This is a grant funded position through June 30th, 2025. Renewal are based on performance and program standards.

 

Schedule

Fall Cycle: Sept - Dec

Winter Cycle: Jan - Mar 

Spring Cycle: April  - June 

 

 

Class Schedule Varies:

 

Mornings - Mon/Wed/Fri 10am - 3pm, Evenings - Tue/Wed/Thur 4pm - 8pm   Saturdays - 10am - 5pm

 

Classes will be in-person at a community library branch

 

Classes will be co-taught with a vocational instructor

 

Class schedule subject to change based on programming needs

 

3 types of IELCE classes:

  • Digital Literacy IC3 for non-native speakers
  • Front Desk Representative/Hospitality for non-native speakers
  • ServSafe Restaurant Suite for non-native speakers

 

*Instructors are to prepare participants to earn an industry recognized credential. After attending the 11-15 week classes, participants will be scheduled to take an in-person certification exam.


*Curriculum will be provided for all instructors to implement throughout the semester.

 

*Teachers must be able to co-teach with a vocational instructor and should be familiar teaching and using Google Classroom and Zoom.
