Overview

Under the supervision of the Manager of Information Commons, the Info Commons Librarian is responsible for performing professional operations in the Shelby White and Leon Levy Information Commons at the Central Library: reference, programming, outreach, and instruction. The Librarian works as part of the Info Commons team to provide quality public library service to the community. Will collaborate with other Central and branch staff to identify community needs and develop services accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • Provide bibliographic instruction, reference, and other information services 
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate a variety of classes and other programs to promote digital literacy; cultural production; and use of the library’s services, facilities, and collections (including online collections and databases) 
  • Do outreach to community organizations and participate in community events 
  • Orient visitors to the design software and other technology in the Info Commons 
  • Assist with preparation and other logistics for Info Commons events 
  • Assist with troubleshooting technology problems 
  • Assist visitors with reserving public meeting rooms 
  • Interpret and implement BPL policy 
  • Actively participate in mandatory and optional training, including professional development workshops and online training 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school; Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York, required
  • General experience working with the public and diverse communities
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Working knowledge of current and emerging library technology, service and programming trends, and urban public library issues
  • High proficiency with internet, electronic databases, social media, and basic computer applications
  • Familiarity with digital media tools such as cameras, microphones, and Adobe Creative Cloud applications
  • Bilingual skills highly desirable
  • Candidates must be flexible, able to handle multiple competing priorities and tasks, adaptable to change and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
  • Ability to bend, reach, sit and stand as needed
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends

 This position is a union position, represented by District Council 37. The salary for this position is $68,176.
