Overview

Drawing on its unique collection of physical and digital primary source materials and artifacts, the Center for Brooklyn History inspires discovery, advances research, and preserves the history and cultural heritage of Brooklyn’s diverse communities. It is a unique resource for the study of Brooklyn’s social and cultural history and a distinct part of Brooklyn Public Library.

 

The Center for Brooklyn History is seeking a library page to support the functions of the Othmer Library. The ideal candidate is reliable, possesses excellent communication skills and knowledgeable in research library operations, with an interest in librarianship, Brooklyn history and archives, to join our dynamic team.

 

This position reports to the Collections and Public Services Assistant Director

Responsibilities

  • Shelving print and non-print material 
  • Shelf reading and organizing shelves and file cabinets
  • Help maintain organization of the department’s materials and physical spaces
  • Facilitating photocopies for staff reproduction requests
  • Completing basic data entry in Excel
  • Transporting and shelving archival material
  • Performing other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent. College degree or enrollment in a Master of Library and Information Science program preferred
  • Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships
  • Must demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy in carrying out duties
  • Ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric order
  • Computer skills necessary, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and email
  • Working knowledge of Library of Congress (LC) and Dewey Decimal classification systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a team and independently
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability

Physical Duties:

  • This position requires lifting and carrying of library materials; pushing and pulling of book trucks; and frequent stooping and reaching.

The Library Page position is up to 19 hours per week at $16 per hour.
