Overview

The Center for Brooklyn History (CBH) is Brooklyn Public Library’s nationally recognized research library and public history institution. Free and open to all, CBH provides visitors with dynamic ways to connect with Brooklyn’s story through its historical collections, enlightening programs, educational resources, and wide-ranging exhibitions. CBH opens the door to Brooklyn’s history--every visit is an opportunity to learn something new. 

 

CBH houses a world-renowned special collections and archives library on the second floor of its landmark building on Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights. The Othmer Library’s magnificent reading room with its stained-glass windows and carved wooden columns transports the visitor to an earlier era and connects them to the most comprehensive repository of materials related to Brooklyn history in the world.    

  

The Digital Collections and Access Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of managing CBH’s digital archives, including public access and the online presence of the physical collections, ensuring they are accessible and representative of the overall mission of the Center.  

 

The schedule is 35 hours per week and this position reports to the Director of Special Collections. This position is hybrid, with an in-office work minimum of four days a week.   This is a non-union, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $75,000-78,000. 

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead for all digital collections processes for CBH  
  • Collaborate with the Director of Special Collections, and CBH digital collections staff to manage Amazon web services, Wordpress, PastPerfect and other collection portal sites  
  • Liaise with BPL IT on implementation and maintenance of digital collections assets  
  • Train new collection staff on procedures related to digital collections  
  • Serve as Collections point person for website content management and server overlap  
  • With the assistance of Archives staff, provide input on the development, maintenance, and implementation of systems, processes, and workflows for processing, description, and digitization of archives and special collections, including creating manuals and establishing and maintaining data standards.  
  • Collaborate with CBH collections staff to create and update metadata for born digital and digitized collection material   
  • Supervise digital project-based archives staff, interns, and volunteers  
  • Provide project support and content for development staff grants   
  • Craft blog posts, and participate in outreach activities media posts in coordination with the collections and public service team  
  • Perform reference services in the Othmer Library as needed  
  • Occasional Saturdays and evenings as needed 

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science
  • Public Librarian’s professional certificate issued by the State of New York
  • Three years of demonstrated experience facilitating or managing digital assets and projects 
  • Demonstrated experience managing databases and digital asset management systems such as ArchivesSpace, Past Perfect, Adobe photoshop, Amazon web services, Collector Systems and Wordpress.  
  • Experience digitizing and working with archival material 
  • Familiarity with data cleanup tools such as OpenRefine  
  • Knowledge of best practices for digital access and preservation  
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically with strong problem-solving skills. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse community 
  • Ability to work as both independently and collaboratively 
  • Strong organization and time-management skills; attention to accuracy and detail is essential  
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
